The island's wine lodges cluster along Funchal's Zona Velha and Avenida Arriaga, their stone warehouses dating to the 1700s. Blandy's, the oldest family firm still operating, has maintained continuous ownership since 1811 and stores vintages in American oak and Slavonian pipas, some bearing chalk inscriptions from the reign of George III. Pereira d'Oliveira's warren of cellars holds demi-johns from the 1850s, their contents reduced by evaporation to a few dozen bottles per decade. Justino's and Henriques & Henriques occupy renovated cooperages where visitors walk past towering tuns and see the estufagem ovens used for lower-tier wines, a faster heat-aging process that contrasts with the patient canteiro approach reserved for premium casks.

Madeira wine tasting tours typically include museum displays of antique corkscrews, bottling equipment, and shipping manifests, then proceed to cellars where the temperature holds steady at 18 degrees Celsius and humidity hovers near 70 percent. Guides pour three to five samples, often progressing from Sercial to Malmsey, and explain the solera-style fractional blending used for non-vintage reserves.
